Where to start?

Posted at 15:04:57 Wed 6 Oct 2021

Hello everyone, glad to finally be here.

I have wanted a Hornby train set since I was a child, and now I have the means to finally invest some time and money, I’m lost at where to start. I have recently begun to board my loft space, as it’s something I’ve long wanted to do, and realised I would have enough space to assemble some track, and later on, some landscape.

I have begun to watch beginner videos and how to get started, but I have to admit that I feel a bit overwhelmed with where to start.

My plan was to start with a starter set, more specifically the R1271M iTraveller 6000 set, because it comes with the HM 6000 which I really like the look of.

I have come here to ask the experts what are a few of the do's and don’ts when starting out? It feels like this is a hobby where the sky is the limit in terms of how much you can spend, both in time and money, and how much space you can use.

I really like the look of the DDC, but is this for more advanced users, or is it something you can use from the start?

The RailMaster seems like something for large scale setups with multiple trains and connections, so is this something I should avoid until I’m more comfortable with how everything works?

I did try to keep this short, but there is so much I’d like to ask. For now, I’ll leave it here. If you have read all the way to this point, thank you, you’re a real trooper.

Thanks all.

This got here fast! Only ordered it a couple of days ago. Was quite expensive for what it is, but it’s very well made I really like the look of it.

As you can see DRC, there is a small flaw in your images. Are you able to retake them or rotate them and come back and edit this post?

If you get stuck let us know and a Moderator can do it for you.

@DarkRedCape, the Santa's Express was what got me into hornby and is a great starter set, so i suggest that

I have other likings other than Hornby, such as Bluey (Award Winning Australian T.V. show), Tom-tom the choo-choo, and other things.

RogerB - This is a very irritating issue with this forum. When I post them, they are right way up. Then when the post is approved, they come out facing some random direction.

If you are using a phone, iPad or tablet they all have a right way up. If you take a picture with device any other way up it will post looking to you as if it is correct, but to the rest of us it will be orientated as it was in the real world i.e. if your device was upside down or rotated so will be the image.

For any iPad or phone the Home button should either be under your right thumb or at the bottom.

You can edit your image to rotate it for the real world and repost by editing your original post, deleting the old picture and inserting the new version.

RAF96 - That’s all well and good, but when I go to add pictures to this forum, they appear right way up. Then when I actually post them, they turn. Obviously I’m not taking pictures with my phone upside down, yet when they appear here they are.

@DRC - I have captured and rotated your images to landscape. I have also test uploaded one of them and it has remained in that orientation.

I realise you are convinced that you are taking the photos correctly but there is no other explanation for your experience.

Are you taking them portrait or landscape.

If landscape which side is the camera shutter button.

Mostly portrait. Landscape when the image doesn’t fit. Under the right thumb. I’m just going to refrain from posting images, unless I need help, and save everyone the bother.

On a different note..

Does anyone have any experience with the ECoS ESU Command Station?

I like to go to online and just search for 00 gauge stuff and I came across this controller, which I’ve not seen up till now.

It’s very expensive, more than twice that of an Elite. The price doesn’t bother me that much, but it will if it’s not worth it.

I watched a couple of videos on it and the UI seems very nice. It’s not particularly new, but I don’t see that being an issue as like the Elite, it can receive updates to keep it working with newer tech.

I remember reading something a while ago, that I can no longer recall where I read it, about oiling your wagon and coach axles.

This seemed logical to me at the time, but when I thought about a medium to large sized layout consisting of 50-100+ wagons and coaches, I wondered if people actually do oil their rolling stock axles.

I got some wagons for Christmas and now I’m curious. Is this something that anyone does?
