LNER Coaches

Posted at 18:49:52 Fri 26 Apr 2013

I've just ordered some of the LNER teaks to go with my new A4.

I noticed there are also quite a few non-vestibuled suburban teaks available now.

I'm trying to put together a 1930's era layout.

Were the vestibuled teaks used on the

express routes, while the non-vestibuled surburbans were used on the more local routes.

Or were the non-vestibuled suburbans pre 1930's coaches which were replaced by the vestibuled coaches?

What sort of loco would you expect to see pulling

the suburbans?

Regards,
Mike.

Hi

As the name suggests the suburbans were built for suburban, and semi-fast, traffic and, if available, could be used on excursion traffic. As most of them didn't have toilets a long(ish) run could be an endurance test. The LNER also had lots

of pre-grouping coaches so the could be a real mixture of coaches.

The type of loco would really depend on the area you are basing your layout in. The locos from the LNER constituants tended to stay in the ares of their origin. However, as a guide

L1

London area of GC and GE area
North Eastern area
B1 Everywhere on the old LNER (Semi fast trains)
B12 On some of the longer cross-country, and long branch, routes on the GER
D49 North Eastern and Scottish areas
N2 Great Northern suburban routes

out of Kings Cross

In addition the company who have blue boxes do a V1/V3 which is ok for North Eastern and also Scottish suburban traffic.

I've just noticed you are looking at 1930s - the L1 and B1 are too recent, being built in the late 1940s,

the V1/V3 just gets in.

Hope this helps

Hi

Just remembered the Blue Box co also do a J39 and a K3 which are suitable for you. I've probably still missed something out!

They also did Thompson corridore coaches - but I think these

would be 1940s

Thanks for all this information.

When I said 30's era, I meant starting in the 30's and up to nationalisation.

I nearly bought a B1 today from a well known shop in Sheffield.
Roedeer R2998 for £70.

But it was an ex display, so I

decided to pass it up.

It was not unknown for other railway's carriages to be added to trains. Through carriages from one company to another were in fact a common sight.

Coaches from the Southern Railway found their way to Newcastle and Sheffield, and to Birkenhead, and

GWR carriages to Margate or Hastings. LMS and LNER carriages were frequently observed at Bournemouth and Southampton, especially in Summer when through holiday excursions were plentiful, in fact LMS carriages could turn up nearly anywhere!
